MANILA – The family of Mary Jane Veloso, along with supporters and migrant rights activists, described the Filipina in death row in Indonesia as “full of joy, hope, and determination” as they visited her at the Wirogunan Prison in Yogyakarta today, Sept. 14.

Mary Jane’s father Cesar and her two sons Mary Daniel and Mark Darren visited her, along with their lawyer Josalee Deinla, Migrante International spokesperson Arman Hernado, and fellow foreign migrant rights advocates supporting the Filipina’s struggle.

In a short e-mail, overseas Filipino group Migrante International said Mary Jane recited a poem that she wrote.

The Veloso family also attended the Interfaith Mission for Solidarity and Service with Migrants, Refugees and Uprooted People, a gathering of faith-based and migrant rights advocacy groups held in Jakarta that looked into collaborative efforts to combat labor trafficking.

In an earlier statement, Migrante International said the international gathering discussed Mary Jane’s ordeal and the ongoing battle here in the Philippines to allow her to testify against her alleged recruiters who are facing syndicated human trafficking and estafa charges before a Nueva Ecija court.

This will be her first time to testify before a court should the Supreme Court, where the legal battle is now pending, will finally rule in her favor.

Mary Jane was set to be executed in 2015 in Indonesia but was granted temporary reprieve to give way to the legal proceedings here in the Philippines. A strong international campaign was also launched at that time, asking Indonesian authorities to spare her as she is a victim of human trafficking.

The Veloso family is set to meet her again tomorrow to have more time together with Mary Jane. (https://www.bulatlat.org)
