Authorities arrested a labor leader around 2 a.m today at the Westdrive Subdivision, Barangay Labas, Santa Rosa City, Laguna.

According to the Organized Labor Association in Line Industries and Agriculture (OLALIA-Kilusang Mayo Uno), labor organizer Leonardo Arceta, 51, was taken to the Santa Rosa Police Station and then transferred to Camp Vicente Lim in Calamba City, Laguna.

Hermie Marasigan, executive vice-president of OLALIA-KMU said that the arrest and detention of Arceta is illegal as the police’s warrant of arrest bears a different name.

Jessa Brillon, the owner of the house and her five-year old daughter were also taken. The two were released later at around 4 a.m.

Marasigan said, “Despite the fact that there are massive layoffs, the government is even running after labor leaders and organizers who are helping the workers.”

The labor group said Arceta’s family and colleagues went to Camp Vicente Lim but the police refused to allow them to see Arceta in person.(Bulatlat.com)
