The Wye River agreement between Israel and Jordan is also instructive of the role Israel plays in implementing US policy in the Middle East. As part of the agreement, Israel and Jordan agreed to the creation of a Conference on Security and Peace in the Middle East. The conference consisted of a consultative group led by the World Bank and an adhoc liaison committee chaired by Norway. It also contained a prohibition against allowing the use of their respective territories by third parties and terrorists. Furthermore, Article 7 Sec, 2b on Economic Relations of the said agreement stipulates, “recognizing that the principle of free and unimpeded flow of goods and services should guide their relations, the Parties will enter into negotiations with a view to concluding agreements on economic cooperation, including trade and the establishment of a free trade area, investment, banking, industrial cooperation and labor…” This is consistent with the US’ “free market” agenda and its drive to push for the free flow of US exports in the form of goods, services, and capital.
Could there be a just and lasting peace in Palestine? For as long as the US arms and uses Israel as its “surrogate army” to push for its political, military and economic interests in the region, definitely not. Only a common and unified stand by all freedom-loving peoples of the world could put a stop to US-Israeli aggression in Palestine and the Middle East, and could facilitate the process of working out a just and lasting peace in Palestine.(Bulatlat.com)
