Off with his head!

Or at least boycott his exhibit.

Artist Mideo Cruz is now at the eye of one of the biggest controversies in the Philippine visual arts scene. His latest work “Poleteismo” is being vilified left and right by various religious groups and influential leaders, and an ABS-CBN reporter has even come out with a column suggesting that he, Cruz, should be forced to drink muriatic acid.

Cruz’ “Poleteismo” is part of the exhibit “KULÔ”, group exhibition at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Main Gallery showing until August 21, 2011. It was launched on June 17 on the occasion of CCP’s celebration of Jose Rizal’s 150th birthday.
TV Patrol’s Mark Logan in his column in the tabloid Abante said many were incensed when they saw the TV Patrol report on Cruz and his exhibition. Logan suggested that those who were angered by how Cruz put together his installation art and murals depicting – among many other concepts — religious icons should kill Cruz.

“Don’t you have pity for this person? Just because he put black tears on the face of Jesus Christ. Will you beat him up when you see him? Stab him, strangle him or push him into a creek? But before this, will you make him drink muriatic acid and then have him shot by a motorcycle-riding tandem? It’s too much! Don’t you have any respect for someone like him who’s an ‘artist’?”

Controversial artist Mideo Cruz says that he never goes out of his way to offend; “But I do like to provoke debates and critical thinking. Art is a way of expressing one’s views about the world, culture and history, and this is what I do in my work. The audience is free to make their own conclusions and interpretations about the images I create, but I must confess I didn’t expect anyone to react so violently against ‘Poleteismo.’(Photos by Ina Alleco Silverio / bulatlat.com)

“Maybe as you’re taking a walk you might get beat up by those you offended to the extreme. With today’s technology, news travels fast! You see buddy, if you say that you have rights, what about the rights of Catholics and other sects who believe that Jesus is God? ”

Logan went on to seemingly address Cruz: “If you’re an atheist or if you believe in no god, don’t violate the beliefs of others! This is a predominantly Catholic country, my boy…”

The reporter went on to say that Cruz’ work was the sort that only a pig would believe to be “art.” His parting shot was to say that Cruz shouldn’t ask the media for help because the media doesn’t have the ability to protect him from being lynched.

Cruz’ Facebook page in the last two weeks has also been bombarded with insults and threats, with many accusing him of, among other things, being a veritable henchman of Satan himself defiling Christ and His Holy Family.

Around 11:30 am on August 4, guards of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CPP) were surprised to discover that Cruz’ work had been vandalized. A Facebook account under the name “CPP Visual Artists” released a statement saying that the security aides were unable to apprehend the vandals, but the CPP has already taken steps to avert further damage to the exhibits.

“We request the arts and culture community to keep vigilant but let us maintain a dignified stance about this. We will not be equal to the rage and extremism of other entities. As you may recall, the CCP has always maintained that freedom of expression extends to all; not just to artists but to those who wish to speak up for their religious and spiritual beliefs within proper means and venues,” it said.

Among the messages the vandals scrawled across various parts of Cruz work was “Emedeo Cruz (I.N.C.) Sumpain ka, Bakla” and “Bakla Parusahan Ka” (Curse You, Homosexual, Homosexual you should be punished).

CCP Visual Arts called for sobriety in the wake of angry pronouncements both in mainstream media and social networks in the internet against Cruz’ “Poleteismo. ”

Archbishop Oscar Cruz , former president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, has called for a boycott of the exhibit.

The group Pro-Life Philippines, in the meantime, has threatened to file charges against the CCP and called the exhibition “sacrilegious and blasphemous. ” Pro-Life President Eric Manalang has been quoted on CBCP News as saying that if the CCP does not stop the exhibit, and make amends, it will proceed with the charges.

“Stopping it is not enough. The damage has been done,” Manalang told CBCP News. He did not say what kind of damage had been wrought and against whom.

CCP Visual Arts said these reactions and courses of action are all valid as moral and legal resorts of those who feel offended by art.
“And though art is representation and does not pretend to be anything more than art, we would like to remind anyone else who are considering violent and destructive acts against art, artists and art institutions that such acts are clearly criminal. Let us all be proper, respectful and tolerant despite our different views. Not all of us are Catholics, not all of us are artists, yet we are all deserving of honor and dignity,” it said.

Critics against “Poleteismo” seem to be ignorant of the fact that it has been exhibited since 2002 in venues such as the Loyola School of Theology in Ateneo de Manila University, UP Vargas Museum, Kulay Diwa in Paranaque City, and was also featured in the music video of Anghel sa Lupa by Stonefree. Cruz has recreated the piece every time it was presented for exhibition.
As for the other “culprit,” the CCP explained that it accepted the exhibition proposal and the artworks based on the determination of the premise that these are legitimate art expressions by artists who have already established reputable track records through national and global awards, grants and expositions.

To provoke critical thinking

As for the potential lynch-mob victim, Cruz is somewhat bewildered and a little sad over the violent reactions. A self-effacing man who avoids direct questions about how he interprets his own art, Cruz said he never expected the negative reactions coming from various quarters.?

“I never go out of my way to offend; but I do like to provoke debates and critical thinking. Art is a way of expressing one’s views about the world, culture and history, and this is what I do in my work. The audience is free to make their own conclusions and interpretations about the images I create, but I must confess I didn’t expect for anyone to react so violently against ‘Poleteismo.’ The worse that I would’ve expected is for no one to come to the CCP and see my work or those of the my colleagues in this exhibition,” he said.

There are those who might say that Cruz is being a bit too naive when he said how surprised he was by the outrage generated by his work. He put up pictures of Jesus Christ and Mother Mary alongside condoms; he got plastic piggy banks and put them inside a glass display case, the sort that’s commonly found in churches; he hung crucifixes and rosaries next to wooden phalluses. Like reporter Logan said, “the Philippines is a predominantly Catholic Country,” so the reaction of some quarters could not have been such a shock.

“I wanted to provoke people into thinking. I titled my work ‘Poleteismo’ which loosely translates into ‘many beliefs’ or ‘many deities.’ Throughout history, humanity has grown to create new gods and these are not always religious figures but concepts and objects. Some have taken to worshipping money; some see politicians as godsend. People create idols and these idols whether or not they’re deserving of idolatry or worship affect our lives and how we function and see the world,” he said.

“Poleteismo” is actually three walls entirely covered with various images and papers — calendars, bus tickets, old school certificates, photographs, political posters, postcards, advertisements and other printed materials. Jesus, Mary and Joseph are not the only images featured, but Robert Jaworski endorsing Dr. J. rubbing alcohol; Alma Concepcion smiling over Champion cigarettes; two Thai actors selling Coca-cola, and US President Barack Obama.

Art is entertainment.

In my opinion, ang reactions (especially the negative, which are obviously driven by emotion) ng ibang tao sa obra ni Mr. Cruz ay understandable. I understand if some people reacted “violently”, I was shocked the firt time I saw it, but I also hoped that after the initial reaction of shock and disbelief, they should have stopped and contemplated first and started to think…. and ask the question, what do the images symbolize, represent? What does the artist try to convey? Instead of condemning him right away just because his work didn’t appeal to us in a tasteful way, why not understand first the idea or the message behind Mr. Cruz’s piece, try to dig deeper. His work maybe visually offensive to some people, especially to Christians, but only if you will look at it superficially. Just like what Mr. Cruz said, try to THINK firt instead of being too judgemental right away.

kasi naman ang filipinong katoliko ang pinipray nila statwa at larawan. they do not use their kukote when they practice their spiritualism. dapat may piktyur pa at statue. kaya when somebody expresses something “offensive to the bobong katoliko” by using these pictures and statues, they are enraged. for the bobong katoliko, the more pictures, statues, dried palms and holy water are placed inside the home, the more holy they feel even if they think evil against people who are just trying to express themselves to provoke critical thinking.

hay naku! kaya pilipinas is backward because of the backward thinking of the bobong katoliko!!!

I think it is obvious why Mr. Cruz turn his insights into an art.

People, he didn’t mock our God — these pictures, images, sculptures aren’t God to begin with. These are just bunch of religious representations. We don’t worship these stuff right? Because if we do that, that’s already idolatry. And I think that’s what he is trying to say, that today, we almost worship everything that we put them to the same level as God.

Instead of feeling ‘ashamed’ or ‘shameful’ for him and work, I think we should be ashamed of ourselves. On surface level, we only see the descration. He risked showing this exhibit because he knows it’s the only way to provoke a reaction from a now ‘catatonic’ nation.

This just shows how ignorant most people are when it comes to dealing with such issues. If you can’t see beyond the symbols he represents with his art, you have no business looking or commenting at it at all. I consider myself very religious and his work doesn’t offend my religious beliefs at all – Why? because my faith is strong and I can see well beyond the ideals and concepts he is trying to present in his art. If you don’t understand it, that’s fine – there’s nothing wrong with that, BUT ITS WRONG TO HATE OR CONDEMN THE THINGS YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND. Let’s take the Philippine flag for example, do you see it as a simple piece of fabric? or a symbol of our nation and the hundreds of lives that were sacrificed to put up the freedom that we enjoy today…. Panahon nah para buksan natin ang ating mga isipan… it is because of limitations like this na hindi umuusad ang ating bansa….

“Far from accusations that Cruz is only trying to generate controversy to be noticed, Cruz sheepishly admits that “Poleteismo” is actually the product of house cleaning. Apparently, the man is a pack-rat and for the last two decades he has been collecting various scraps of paper and whatnot with the general intention of some day putting them to use.”

I save up “junk-yard” items in my home like bote, lata at plastic. I intend to give them to the kids who ask for them from time to time to be sold to junk shops for a few centavos. If Mideo Cruz was able to exhibit scraps in the CCP no less, then maybe I could also use these “junk-yard” items in my house, glue them together into an offensive little mess and be hailed as an artist as well!
It’ll be an artistic expression of a stay-at-home Filipino wife/mom’s daily demise….I’ll call it “Melancholia nang Paglilinis ng Isang Pilipinang Ina” or something. It’s a striking representation of the Filipino way of life.

    Daming satsat, daming rationalizations.

Cut, paste, glue…

Sabihin na nating hindi lahat ng tao Katoliko, iba-iba ang paniniwala, iba-iba ang kaisipan, and that “freedom of expression in the form of art is absolute. It is a constitutional right of every Filipino.” But the fact that this was exhibited in the CCP,
IS THIS REALLY THE QUALITY OF ART THAT WE WISH TO LEAVE AS LEGACY TO THE FUTURE ARTISTS OF OUR COUNTRY?

Baka gusto nyong mahiya nang konti sa mga National Artists natin like Amorsolo and Luna. After all, they did not get hailed as National Artists merely by exhibiting cheap offensive work and provoking religious debate.

“TO PROVOKE CRITICAL THINKING”. E lahat naman ng artform be it sculture, painting, film, etc. ang purpose is to make us think and critique these obra maestra.

The problem here is that freedom of expression is sometimes interpreted to mean that you can bastardized others’ belief so long as you can express your thought.

This is the kind of ART that this country needs, an art that touches the more sensitive side of the country’s religion. We put a blind eye on the bishops recieving the pajeros, the coins you donate in boxes of every wooden saint inside your church that does not go to heaven as we know it but goes to the pockets of church people which in turn some of it goes to the charity and most of it goes to the Vatican. We also contradict with the church stand on RH bill but we are not firm enough on our stand to the point that we are already on the same where they are standing. ART is created to be appreciated by people and not to be interpreted as something created to offend the beliefs of other people, if you don’t like it and is quite repulsive to your tastes then don’t look at it or just don’t go to the exhibit. So many people here have posted reactions that are quite over-reacting to the situation. It you believe in your GOD and you are offended by this, why in the first place learn about thois exhitbit, are you looking for something to offend you so you can put up a fight with someone. If your are too concerned that your religion has been offended a work of ART are you also concerned that some people who don’t beleive in the so called GOD have been offended by the teachings and the political standings of yuor church? This country is not only a country of Catholics, but a country of diverse beliefs. Why is it so that the Catholic church always stand in every law promulgated by the country, are they they also not sensitive to the beliefs of other religion or some people who does not have any religion at all? If ART like this are offensive to feelings of the faithful, then some of the beliefs of the faithful are also offensive to the ideas of people who does not have religion at all.

As for Mr. Cruz normal na ganyan ang maging reaction ng mga tao sayo dahil nasa Katolikong Bansa tayo. You should know that dahil nag aral ka sa isang paaralan sa Maynila na pinamumunuan ng mga Katolikong Pari. University of Sto.Tomas.

Is anyone of you follow that 10 commandment of Almighty?
is anyone of you read the whole of the bible?
How can you condemned a man,s work if you yourself does’ny know the 10 commandment of Almighty. In the first place Even that Almighty who instructed that 10 commandment you dont know. God, LORD, ALLAH, Dyos, who is that Almighty that you are referring to? ZechariYah 14:9 The Almight has ONE name, but nobody know what is HIS ONE NAME.

Matthew 7:3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

Matthew 7:4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?

Matthew 7:5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

THE HOLY TEN COMMANDMENTS OF HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL
    (SHEMOT 20: 3-14 DEVARIM 5: 7-18)

    1. You shall have no other gods besides Me. I Am the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL your HOLY GOD Command you.
    2. You shall not make for yourself a sculptured image, or any likeness of what is in the heavens above; or on the earth below, or in the water under the earth. You shall not bow to them or serve them. For I Am the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL your HOLY GOD Am a Jealous GOD; visiting the guilt of the parents upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generations of those people who reject Me, but showing My kindness to thousands of generations to those people who are devoted to Me and obey My Holy Commandments.
    3. You shall not swear falsely by the Holy Name of the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL your HOLY GOD; for the HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL will not clear one who swears falsely by My Holy Name.
    4. Remember the Sabbath Day and keep it Holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath Day of the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL your HOLY GOD: you shall not do any work; you, your son, your daughter, your male and female slave, or your cattle, or the stranger who is within your settlements. For in six days the HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and all that is in them, and the HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL rested on the seventh day; therefore the HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL blessed the Sabbath Day and made it Holy.
    5. Honor your Father and your Mother; that you may long endure in the land that the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL your HOLY GOD is assigning to you. I Am the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL your HOLY GOD Command you.
    6. You shall not murder. I Am the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL your HOLY GOD Command you.
    7. You shall not commit adultery. I Am the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL your HOLY GOD Command you.
    8. You shall not steal. I Am the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL your HOLY GOD Command you.
    9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. I Am the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL your HOLY GOD Command you.
    10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house: you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife; or his male and female slave or his ox or his ass, or anything else that is your neighbor’s property. I Am the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL your HOLY GOD Command you.

Know then this day and put in mind that the HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL Alone is GOD in heaven above and on earth below; and there is no other god at all, declares the HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL.
    (DEVARIM 4:39)

And this shall be My Holy Covenant with them said the HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL. My Holy Spirit which is upon you and the Holy Words which I have place in your mouth, shall not be absent from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your children, nor from the mouth of your children’s children said the HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL, from now on and for all time, declares the HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL.
    (Isaiah 59: 21)
The Glory and Victory of HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL with His Pure Servants

Now then, if you obey Me faithfully and keep My Holy Covenant the Holy Ten Commandments, you shall be My Treasure Possession among all the people on earth. Indeed, all the earth is Mine, declares the HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL.
    (SHEMOT 19:5)

In every place where I cause My Holy Name to be mentioned I will come to you and I will bless you, declares the HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL.
    (SHEMOT 20:21)

I Am the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL, that is My Holy Name; I do not give My Glory to another, I do not give My Renown to idols, declares the HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL.
    (Isaiah 42:8)

No weapon formed against you shall succeed and every tongue that contends with you at Holy Laws you shall defeat. Such is the lot of the pure servants of the HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL, Such their Victory through Me, declares the HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL.
    (Isaiah 54:17)

    My Pure Prayer
My HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL our Only One True Living GOD, Creator of heaven and earth, the HOLY GOD of our ancestors Abraham, Isaac and HOLY YISRAEL, You are GOD of Love, GOD of Mercy and GOD of Justice, because of Your Great Holy Abundant Mercy, please have mercy on me and please forgive me for all my sins and mistakes. I surrender my life to You our HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL because You are My Creator and my Redeemer. Please understand me that I do not want to promise anything to You because I do not like to commit sins and mistakes against You, but please guide me according to Your Holy Way that I will be able to obey all Your Holy Ten Commandments and Holy Decrees with the New Holy Covenant in actions for Your Glory and Victory now, forever and ever. I thank You our HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL for everything and for granting all my prayer. I praise Your Holy Name our HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL now, forever and ever. hallelujah!

Do not fear them for it is the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL your HOLY GOD Who will battle for you to bring you victory for My Glory, declares the HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL.
    (DEVARIM 3:22)

Know then this day that none other than the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL your HOLY GOD is crossing at your head, a devouring fire; it is the HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL Who wipe them out, declares the HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL.
    (DEVARIM 9:3)

It is the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL your HOLY GOD Who marches with you, to do battle for you against all your enemies to bring you Victory for My Glory, declares the HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL.
    (DEVARIM 20:4)

Moreover, the Glory of HOLY YISRAEL does not deceive or change His mind; for HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL is not human being that He should change His mind, declares the HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY YISRAEL.

Freedom of expression is not absolute. It is not a license to desecrate and insult items held sacred by other people.

Mideo Cruz said: “I wanted to provoke people into thinking.”

If that so then why don’t you provoke the Muslims by displaying art works offending to them and see how they will react? Christians are easy target for you coz they don’t react the way Muslims would.

You should be dropped into the mouth of an active volcano along with emily abrera who also praises your work.
