MAKATI CITY — Manila Auxiliary Bishop and National Rural Congress II (NRC II) vice-chair Broderick S. Pabillo fears that government doleouts on food and electricity for the urban poor will be subject to corruption.

In a press conference in line with the opening of the two-day rural congress here, Pabillo told media that the cash coupons being distributed by Malacañang, which are meant for food and electricity “subsidies,” are not easy to account for; thus they can be subject to corruption.

Meanwhile, Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) president and Jaro Archbishop Angel N. Lagdameo said that these doleouts are emergency measures only and must not replace a sound economic policy that will take people out of poverty.

The prelate proposes to re-study the economic policies currently being implemented by the Arroyo government and see if these are really working for the good of the Filipino people. Contributed to(Bulatlat.com)
