Buenaventura Calaquian, a farmer in Barangay Asturias, Hacienda Luisita, in Tarlac, narrates how soldiers harassed him in November. His case was just among many such harassments since the strike and massacre at the hacienda in 2004. According to farmers and their leaders, the militarization in Hacienda Luisita intensified during the run-up to the signing of the controversial compromise agreement between the management and the farm workers. Hacienda Luisita is owned by the Philippine president, Benigno S. Aquino III, and his family.
