AMPATUAN, Maguindanao -- Marking the first year since the massacre of 58 people in Ampatuan town, Maguindanao, thousands troop to Sitio Masalay, Barangay Salman, to pay tribute and demand justice for the victims. The families of the victims offered flowers, candles and prayers and demand for the speedy resolution of the case. The families were joined by various human-rights and media groups led by Alliance Against Impunity in Mindanao, InPeace Mindanao, Union of Peoples' Lawyers in Mindanao, National Union of Peoples' Lawyers and National Union of Journalists of the Philippines.

Progressive groups in Southern Mindanao Region, led by human-rights group Karapatan, on Tuesday revealed that farmers in Maco, Davao del Norte, continue to experience threats and psychological torture from members of the Philippine military. According to Karapatan-SMR, the farmers have been tagged as members of the New People's Army and were included in The Order of Battle, which forced them and their families to evacuate their homes.

Thousands of farmers from various provinces in Southern Mindanao held a protest-march dubbed “Martsa alang sa Yuta ug Hustisya!” (March for Land and Justice!) at Rizal Park, Davao City on October 22. Led by the Kilusang Magbubukid sa Pilipinas-Southern Mindanao Region, farmers threw eggs with red paint at a poster bearing President Benigno Aquino III's face, calling him a total failure for not having the heart nor the political intent and morality to uplift the plight of hapless farmers in the region.

Some 23 families were evacuated from their homes at City Camp Lagoon Monday morning, as floodwaters begin to rise at the city's lowest part. Evacuees, numbering to at least 100 individuals, are staying in Aguinaldo Elementary School in Barangay QM. However, some residents in Little Kibungan in La Trinidad, Benguet, refuse to leave their homes, despite being declared as a hazardous area by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau of the DENR.
