Various progressive groups led by the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) marched to Kalaw Avenue in Manila today, June 12, to commemorate the 128th Philippine Independence Day.

Protesters condemned Ferdinand Marcos Jr. administration’s close ties with the United States, saying the continued presence of US troops and military operations in the country remains a barrier to genuine independence.

“They (government) do not uphold genuine freedom anchored on justice because they are dragging us to war,” said Makabayan President Liza Maza in Filipino in her speech.

Maza also criticized the planned US-backed Pax Silica industrial hub set to rise at the New Clark City, which science and environmental groups have opposed over issues of displacement and geopolitical risks.
