‘Send Gloria Arroyo back to jail’

MANILA — Outraged over the temporary release of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, members of Anakpawis Partylist trooped to Arroyo’s residence in Quezon City at La Vista Subdivision, July 26.

The group served a “people’s warrant of arrest” against Arroyo, now representative of Pampanga’s second district. Arroyo has been granted temporary release after she posted P1-million bail for charges of electoral sabotage.

“Eight months of hospital arrest is not enough punishment for Arroyo’s long list of crimes against the people. We want her jailed for life,” Anakpawis vice chairman Fernando Hicap said.

“Arroyo is guilty beyond reasonable doubt on many heinous crimes against the people. She is guilty of plunder, human rights violations, graft and corruption, electoral fraud and sabotage. During her presidency, she committed the worst forms of abuse against workers, farmers, fisher folks and urban poor. We demand justice,” Hicap said.

Hicap said the Aquino administration “showed no genuine sincerity in punishing Arroyo and condoned the culture of impunity through its lenient treatment of Arroyo and her ilk including fugitive General Jovito Palparan Jr.”

Arroyo is also facing a plunder case in connection with misuse of Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) funds and two counts of graft and one count of breach of ethics in connection with the $329-million National Broadband Network (NBN) deal. All cases are with the Sandiganbayan.
