News Release
March 24, 2010
Militant group, Bagong Alyansang Makabayan-National Capital Region (Bayan-NCR) today calls on attention of voters in the second district of Pampanga not to support the congressional bid of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The group made the statement as thousands marched from various converging points: Welcome Rotonda, Taft Avenue, Sta. Cruz and Tondo going to the Don Chino Roces Bridge in Mendiola today for the annual Lenten-themed rally, dubbed as ‘Kalbaryo ng Mamamayan.’
Protesters today staged the said protest march in time of the start of the official campaign period for various local posts. Bayan-NCR vows to take-up all forms of actions possible just to block attempts and maneuvers of PGMA to hold-on to power beyond her term on June 30, 2010. Militant groups earlier launched their ‘Stop Gloria in 2010’ campaign last week to slam Palace’s grand design to perpetuate in power.
Roy Velez, NCR chairman of Bayan noted that the congressional bid of PGMA in Pampanga is just an ingredient to a grand recipe of a ‘Gloria Forever’ scenario. To show their protests, the group burned a 30-inches long effigy of PGMA in Mendiola, which depicts as a snake being carried by minions of the administration as the military and SC justices.
He cited that among other plans that will complete the huge design of PGMA’s perpetuation in the presidency beyond 2010 includes intense political repression, massive deployment of soldiers on urban areas, appointment of Delfin Bangit as new AFP chief of staff, Palace intervention on the SC decision regarding PGMA’s appointment of new chief justice, charter change, shift of government form to parliamentary, and the possible no election (NO-EL) scenario and failure of elections among others.
Velez said, ‘The administration’s desperation to strongly cling-on to power clearly knows no boundaries and will not consider any limitations. PGMA surely will do all possible maneuvers and cook-up measures that will assure her immunity to all charges once stepped-down as president.’
Velez added, ‘After ruining the integrity of both executive and legislative arm of the government, Mrs. Arroyo now evidently tries to spoil the pillars of the judiciary for her own self-vested interests.’
‘The Filipino people will no longer allow PGMA to remain in power beyond her term. Nine years of extreme hunger and poverty under her rule is enough and must end immediately. If PGMA will be able to accomplish her evil plans to reposition self in the Palace after June 30, 2010, we will call on every Filipinos to convene in Welcome Rotonda to put her out of Malacanang at the soonest possible time,’ Velez ended.
