Pidal and NBN
September 22, 2007

Four years after presidential spouse Mike Arroyo hit the headlines for his alleged ownership of the Jose Pidal accounts, in which government funds to be used as President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s campaign funds were supposedly deposited, he again courts a corruption-related controversy. This time he is directly implicated in the National Broadband Network (NBN) deal, an overpriced and rigged contract between the Philippine government and China’s ZTE Corp. The NBN deal, which purportedly aims to connect all government offices throughout the Philippines through the Internet, is thus far the biggest corruption scandal to hit the Arroyo administration in its six years.
