All of the workers fired are contractuals. They hail from Didipio and adjacent villages (barangays), where Oceana Gold and its contractors are supposed to get majority of its employees.

More than half a million government employees are non-regulars who are classified under different names, suc as emergency-hired, memorandum-of-agreement (MOA) workers, job-order employees.
Their only demands are regularization on the job, immediate economic relief through a wage increase, and some benefits.

The KMU asked the government to infuse its anti-contractualization efforts with an aim of promoting regular employment.
The longtime MRT3 contractual ticket sellers were replaced by new, lower-paid contractual workers, with lower salary grade levels.
