They went to Ajman, United Arab Emirates to work as cleaners and office assistants in various schools. Suddenly, their employer left them with unpaid utility bills and two months of salaries. After bearing intense heat and absence of electricity and potable water for more than a month, the 46 Filipina workers ended up in jail.
While President Benigno Aquino III and his group are enjoying hotdogs in New York, migrant workers under Migrante-UAE are protesting the recent budget cut for OFWs. The group said that the rights and welfare of migrant workers do not seem to be a priority for the Aquino administration. The indoor protest was held in Karama, Dubai on September 23.

Migrante International chairperson Garry Martinez told Bulatlat that he is not surprised if there are negative reactions coming from Hongkong nationals and its possible repercussions to OFWs. "We express our sincerest condolences to the families and friends of the victims," Martinez said, "We know how difficult it is to fetch a loved one who is dead."
Migrante International launched a petition campaign on Tuesday at the seafarers’ recruitment center in T.M. Kalaw, Manila, denouncing the recent increase in e-passport fees, in light of allegations that the contract entered into by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) for the procurement of the new e-passport is illegal and tainted with corruption.

Migrante is calling on the Aquino administration to prosecute former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for misusing funds for OFWs, repeal anti-migrant policies, provide more services to OFWs and their families, including special protection to migrant women and minors, review and increase the budget for services for OFWs, to establish special courts to try complaints of abuses against OFWs, and to forge bilateral agreements with receiving countries for the protection of OFWs, among others
