“I kept calling out my sister’s name, who I thought was already in heaven.”
“I became resolute because of all of you.”
People who held vigil at the Indonesian embassy for Mary Jane Veloso are just like her, hopeful to find better lives, and justice.
“As we work for Mary Jane’s freedom, we also continue to hold the Aquino regime accountable for its neglect of OFWs and the continuing economic policies that have made the poor ever vulnerable to human trafficking.”
“The whole Filipino nation and the world now cry tears of joy, but collectively."
“We stand with the Filipino people and the rest of the world to save Mary Jane Veloso from death row.”
“Profoundest apologies for failing Mary Jane, her family and all migrant workers, I could not bring Darren’s mom home alive.”
A day before her execution, the Indonesian Supreme Court rejected Mary Jane Veloso’s appeal for a second judicial review.
Edre Olalia, secretary general of the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers, said Mary Jane urged them to pursue a case against her recruiter, Ma. Kristina Sergio, “not only to give her justice but to save other future victims.”
“The clock is ticking. We have 72 hours to save Mary Jane’s life. The Filipino people are behind Mary Jane and her family. We are not giving up."
Migrante International challenged Aquino to recall its diplomats in Jakarta, disapprove or suspend any Indonesian company’s application for investment and to bare the list of all Filipino migrant workers who are either languishing in jail or on death row.
Mary Jane is scheduled to be executed by firing squad on Tuesday, April 28.
“She tells her family not to feel sad and is buoying up their sprits.”
“I sincerely pray to to be saved from the death penalty and to be given the opportunity to bring up my children.”
“I should have noted every word and every promise they gave our family. All along, I really thought they were handling my sister’s case.”
“What is important now is that the Indonesia’s High Prosecutor himself said the filing of the petition for a second judicial review may or may not affect the carrying out of the death penalty. It was not immediately dismissed.”
"The truth is that Aquino did not do anything for Mary Jane’s case.”
"In accordance with international and parallel local laws, (Veloso) must not be penalized for any alleged crime which was integral and in connection with such human trafficking scheme, and must instead be repatriated back to the Philippines.”
“The NLG recognizes that Veloso’s case is not a singular, isolated incident, but rather a product of an exploitative economic system purposefully built upon the labor of overseas workers.”
Relatives of distressed OFWs expressed support to Mary Jane Veloso while expressing their frustrations over the seeming lack of action from the government.
