Both Neri Colmenares and Carlos Zarate are working as pro-bono legal counsels for victims of human rights violations in the current and past administrations. Both of them were lawmakers and three-term members of the House of Representatives, representing the marginalized sector under the Bayan Muna Partylist.
Human rights lawyer Edre Olalia said that the award is an “extraordinary recognition by one’s own peers,” an acknowledgment of people’s lawyering as a legitimate field of practice.
"We strongly condemn this heartless attack against our sister in the profession. We staunchly urge government authorities to act swiftly in the apprehension of the perpetrators."

Law practitioners will come together for a two-day summit as they call to uphold the rule of law and aid victims of President Duterte’s War on Drugs.
