To prevent rebels from gaining ground in Toril, the Philippine Army established a military detachment in a village and sent out more soldiers. The soldiers are called “Peace and Development Teams.” But residents find the soldiers’ conduct rather unbecoming of the new tag by which they are now called.

On October 28, members of Gabriela marched in the streets of Davao City during the commemoration of the 27th year of National Day of Protest of Filipino Women, protesting the continuing state violence and oppression against Filipino women under the administration of President Benigno Aquino III.
The urban poor in the city have another reason to protest in the streets these days. They rage not just because their houses are being demolished, but, this time, because they could not just take the rapidly increasing costs of surviving anymore, especially with the announced spike in electricity rates.
Protest actions by progressive groups were held on Tuesday in commemoration of the 38th anniversary of the declaration of martial law in 1972.

DAVAO CITY -- Voting in Barangay Centro Agdao is going at a snail's pace. Lines are long and at the rate the automated voting is progressing, observers fear many will not be able to cast their ballots by the time polling centers close. Voters who have agonized waiting in line grudgingly call the PCOS machines "tikas machines", with pun intended. Workers, who still have to report for work and those who find the long lines and the wait much too daunting, have already left the precincts without casting their votes.
