The number of Filipinos who think that there is severe corruption in the Arroyo
administration is increasing, according to the results of the third quarter IBON
nationwide survey.
IBON Executive Director Rosario Bella Guzman said, "This is due to persistent
questions of whether President Arroyo rigged the 2004 elections and used public
funds to do so."
Similarly, the administration's move of sending to exile abroad the President’s
husband, Miguel Arroyo, has not helped to remove the stain of corruption from
her administration. He has been accused of allegations of influence-peddling and
taking kickbacks from jueteng since Mrs. Arroyo took office in January 2001.
"No amount of physical absence can make people forget corruption allegations
against the Arroyo administration," said Guzman. "People have not put these
behind them because these allegations have yet to be resolved."
About 82.1 percent of the respondents believed that corruption in the Arroyo
government was "severe," a sharp rise from the 69.1 percent recorded last
quarter. Similarly, respondents who believed that corruption in the government
was "minimal" fell to 5.9 percent from 11.2 percent in the previous quarter.
The IBON survey was conducted nationwide Sept. 26-Oct. 7 with 1,366 respondents.
The margin of error is + or -3 percent.
