KMU Leaders
Arrested in Attempted Visit to Jailed Solon
BY ALEXANDER MARTIN REMOLLINO Posted
6:00 p.m. Feb. 27, 2006
Two leaders of the Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU
or May First Movement) were arrested this morning as they and close to a hundred
members of the said labor federation trooped to Camp Crame, the national
headquarters of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Arrested were Dennis Maga and Marcial
Dabela. Maga is the spokesperson of the Gloria Step Down Movement (GSM) while
Dabela is the vice-chairperson of the Association of Democratic labor
Organizations (ADLO).
The militant workers had intended to visit
jailed Anakpawis Rep. Crispin Beltran, who has been detained at Camp Crame since
being arrested Feb. 25. They were stopped by about 150 truncheon-wielding
policemen a few hundred meters from Camp Crame’s EDSA gate.
Maga tried to negotiate with the
police so that the militant workers could be allowed to enter Camp Crame and
visit Beltran. As negotiations were going on, a police officer ordered the
anti-riot team to disperse the workers and arrested Maga and Dabela.
